Apple has appealed to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) to challenge the UK government’s demand to create a backdoor that would give government agencies access to encrypted iCloud data from users around the world, TechCrunch reports.
The IPT appeal reportedly came at the same time that Apple disabled the Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature for iCloud in the UK. This feature allowed all data in the cloud storage to be encrypted so that it could not be accessed in any way.
The government believes that despite these actions, the company has not complied with the requirements. The initial complaint to the company concerned a backdoor that would have given access to encrypted iCloud data of users around the world. However, Apple continues to offer ADP to users in other countries.
It is reported that this could be the first time that the UK's encryption-breaking powers have been examined by the security watchdog, but the hearings are likely to be held in secret.
