Traditionally, at the end of summer, Samsung company presented the folding flagship smartphones Galaxy Fold5 and Galaxy Flip5. The novelties offer an evolutionary update that should emphasize the maturation of this category of devices. I managed to attend the presentation of smartphones in Kyiv, so I will tell you more about them below.
Both models received cosmetic updates on the one hand, but important updates on the other. One of the main innovations was a redesigned hinge, which now allows you to fold the halves of the smartphone case almost without a gap.
This did not greatly affect the appearance, but it radically changes the feeling when you hold the devices in your hands.
Smartphones feel monolithic and have become more compact. The thickness of the Galaxy Fold5 when folded has decreased to 13.4 mm, and the weight now reaches 253 grams, which is 10 grams less than the Fold4.
Flip5 in the folded format has also become thinner – 15.1 mm, against almost 17.1 mm in the thickest part of the case of last year’s Flip4. At the same time, the weight of the novelty has not changed and is 187 grams.
The dimensions of the external and internal flexible display in the Galaxy Fold5 remained unchanged. The smartphone still offers a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a resolution of 2316×904 pixels and a refresh rate of 48 to 120 Hz for work on the go.
In addition, there is a main flexible 7.6-inch Infinity Flex screen with a resolution of 2176×1812 dots and a frequency of 1 to 120 Hz. An innovation for this model was an increase in maximum brightness to 1300 nits in normal mode and to 1750 nits in automatic mode.
The Galaxy Flip5 now features a 3.4-inch external Flex Window display with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and a resolution of 740×748 pixels. It is now convenient to use to create photos and videos on the main cameras.
In addition, you can switch between 13 widgets, including the player, weather, calendar, voice recorder, and quick settings. The main screen of the Galaxy Flip5 has not changed – it is a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X Infinity Flex matrix with a resolution of 2640×1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz.
Both smartphones are built on the new flagship platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with slightly overclocked frequencies specifically for the Galaxy and Adreno 740 graphics. This is a very fast chip that provides a high level of performance both in applications and in games In the Galaxy Fold5, it is complemented by 12 GB of RAM and 256, 512 GB, and even 1 TB of memory. This is the first time that an official Galaxy Fold with this size of storage will be available in Ukraine.
Versions with 8 GB of RAM and 256 and 512 GB of built-in memory will be available for the Galaxy Flip5.
Along with the platform, the Galaxy Fold5’s multitasking software has also been updated, with the bottom taskbar now also featuring the four most recently launched apps, allowing you to quickly switch between them.
It is worth noting that a thinner and lighter S Pen will be available for the Galaxy Fold5 this year. It will still be sold as a separate accessory, but now it will be more convenient to carry with you thanks to new cases in which the S Pen will be completely hidden without protruding from the case.
Cameras in smartphones have not received updated characteristics, Galaxy Fold5 offers three modules: 50-megapixel wide-angle, 10-megapixel telephoto, and 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle.
In turn, Flip5 has two main cameras: 12-megapixel wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle.
Samsung promises that the quality of pictures will improve thanks to the new processor and better post-processing. However, we will be able to check this already in full smartphone reviews.
Loud stereo speakers, IPX8 water protection, as well as support for Wi-Fi 7 wireless networks, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC for contactless payments, are among other smartphone features.
As with last year’s models, the battery capacity for the Galaxy Fold5 is 4400 mAh and 3700 mAh for the Flip5, both models support fast wired and wireless charging, as well as reversible charging. Whether the updated platform will affect the autonomy of devices, we will find out soon in full reviews.
Samsung’s new foldable smartphone models have received the expected updates, with a redesigned hinge that reduced the gap between the halves of the case, an updated platform to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, improved software for multitasking, and reduced dimensions. The Galaxy Fold5 also got a brighter screen, and the Flip5’s external display increased to 3.4 inches.
In general, we have evolutionary changes that improve various aspects of using the devices, which is unlikely to prompt owners of the previous generation of Fold and Flip to upgrade. However, it will definitely help attract new users who have long been waiting for more compact and convenient folding smartphones.
The price of the Galaxy Flip5 starts at UAH 42,999 for the 256 GB version and UAH 46,999 for the 512 GB version. The price of the Galaxy Fold5 starts at UAH 74,999 for the 256 GB version, UAH 78,999 for the 512 GB version, and UAH 86,999 for the 1 TB version.
