Google and Microsoft have joined the financing of the upcoming inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, with each company donating $1 million, The Verge reports. Thus, they joined the list of major tech giants that supported the event, including Meta, Amazon, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Apple CEO Tim Cook.
In a comment to CNBC, Google’s head of public policy and international affairs Karan Bhatia confirmed that the company is supporting the inauguration financially, as well as providing a live stream of the event on YouTube and placing a link to it on the search engine’s home page. According to Bhatia, this support is part of Google’s efforts to actively participate in the political process. However, experts point out that the move may also be an attempt to mend fences with Trump, who has previously threatened to split the company or limit its operations in the United States.
Microsoft has also allocated $1 million for the inauguration, a company spokesperson confirmed in a comment to CNBC. Microsoft already has experience with such donations: in 2017, the company contributed $500,000 to Trump’s first inauguration, and in 2021, the same amount to Joe Biden’s inauguration.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has met with Trump on several occasions in the past. In particular, Nadella participated in negotiations on the possible acquisition of TikTok in 2020, when Trump tried to ban it in the United States for national security reasons.
The financial contributions from Google and Microsoft reflect a broader trend among tech leaders to engage with the Trump administration. While some companies have openly criticized Trump’s policies on technology, immigration, and climate change, many are seeking to maintain access to influence in Washington as they prepare for Trump’s second term.
