There’s been all kinds of things done to the original 1993 DOOM – running it on smartwatches, creating other games based on it in completely different settings, etc. – but the authors of DOOM: The Gallery Experience managed to surprise even experienced fans.

This is a free game that turns a brutal and bloody shooter into an easy and relaxing walk through an art museum with unobtrusive classical music. The developers of DOOM: The Gallery Experience took the first level of the game, E1M1: Hangar, and turned it into a virtual exhibition, with works of art in its halls and corridors – each with a link to the corresponding page on the website of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Instead of a chainsaw or a shotgun in the game, a glass of red wine (or a can of beer if you find it in a hidden place), the player picks up snacks and scattered money that can be used to buy some exhibits.

Initially, the project started as a student assignment, but later the developers decided to turn it into a parody of contemporary art culture – one of the developers told VG247 that he himself works in this industry as an artist’s assistant and is well acquainted with the atmosphere in contemporary galleries.

The developers did not use the original DOOM engine or its modern variations, turning instead to Construct 3. The game contains only one level and can be downloaded for free from the official website or played right there in a browser window.
