Google has introduced a new operating system called Android XR. The abbreviation “XR” stands for “augmented reality,” a term that encompasses virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, as well as the corresponding headsets.

Android XR will be a direct competitor to visionOS, which runs Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Google will port many of its applications to this platform, such as Maps, YouTube, Chrome, and Photos. The system will also support third-party applications through the Play Store.

Gemini artificial intelligence will become a key part of Android XR, simplifying user interaction with the system. It will be able to help with various tasks and record audio and video.

Android XR is currently at the initial stage of development. By the way, Google is working with Samsung on a headset codenamed Moohan, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
