Automattic, the company that owns WordPress.com, Tumblr, and many other services, has announced the acquisition of WPAI, a startup that creates artificial intelligence solutions for WordPress.
WPAI has three main products in its portfolio - CodeWP, an integrated development environment (IDE) with artificial intelligence for WordPress developers, AgentWP, and an autonomous AI agent that can perform various tasks in an automated manner. In addition to this, the startup has a chatbot that provides answers to any WordPress-related questions.
All these tools will be automatically integrated into Automattic services and products in the near future and will not require additional plug-ins or extensions. WPAI will continue to work on new AI-based features and improve the core functionality of the platform.
“We are excited to combine forces with Automattic to push the boundaries of how we can apply artificial intelligence to be more impactful on the CMS that powers the majority of the internet. By integrating our technology and research with current and future Automattic products, we’ll be able to accelerate towards our goal of making WordPress, the Operating System of the Web, more accessible to everybody," said James LePage, founder of WPAI.
Earlier this year, Automattic also acquired Beeper, a universal chat app, for $125 million. At the same time, the company's CEO started a public dispute with WP Engine, a WordPress plugin company, over the alleged illegal use of the brand.
