Samsung smartphones support both Google Assistant and the new Gemini assistant. However, you cannot call them by pressing the power button, as this function is reserved for the proprietary Bixby assistant. However, according to Android Authority, this may change soon.
Samsung devices allow users to customize the actions that are performed when they double-click or hold the power button. Gestures can be customized to perform specific actions, but they limit users to launching the not-so-popular Bixby, even if it’s not the default assistant. However, in the latest update of the Google Android app, there are hints that this action will soon be customizable as well.
Android Authority journalists have found a mention of a new feature in the latest version of Google’s app that will allow Samsung smartphone owners to call the Gemini voice assistant by long-pressing the side button. The code for the mentioned feature has the prefix “_samsung”, which further hints at the purpose of this update.
In addition, Google’s code mentions the same functionality without a prefix of a particular company, which means that owners of smartphones from other manufacturers will probably also be able to launch voice assistants by pressing the power button in the future.
It is currently unknown when this innovation will become available to Galaxy device owners, but the most likely option is that the new functionality will appear in One UI 7. As a reminder, Samsung has already started testing the new interface. As for the release, it will take place with the launch of the Galaxy S25 line in January 2025.
