Apple has ordered new M-series processors from TSMC. This was reported by The Elec.
We are talking about M5 chips. According to the report, the new products will be manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3nm technology rather than the more expensive 2-nm architecture. This decision is likely related to economic feasibility.
The M5 will feature significant improvements over its predecessor, the M4, thanks to System on Integrated Chip (SoIC) technology. This three-dimensional layout method provides improved thermal management and minimizes electrical losses. Apple will also introduce hybrid SoIC packaging technologies using a thermoplastic composite in the M5. Trial production of these chips began in July 2024.
Mass production of M5 is expected to start in the second half of 2025, and devices with the new processors will be available in late 2025 or early 2026. In particular, the following gadgets may receive M5:
- iPad Pro (end of 2025 – mid-2026),
- MacBook Pro (end of 2025),
- MacBook Air (early 2026),
- Apple Vision Pro (fall 2025 – spring 2026).
