Apple has a reputation for taking its time to introduce new categories of devices, and this also applies to the Vision Pro headset. According to Macworld, the development of this device lasted at least 15 years before it was officially released to the market.

The journalist was reminded of a 2008 Apple article describing the company’s new patent.

“A recently uncovered patent, filed by Apple in February, reveals that they may be working on a wearable display that can simulate the experience of being in a virtual environment with the help of intelligent sensors. Apparently, these sensors will be able to detect movements of the head and even the eye, adapting the video accordingly to make the wearer feel like he’s actually in a real environment.”

In addition, the patent depicted a device that is very similar to the final version of Vision Pro.

Apple has been developing Vision Pro since at least 2008

As a reminder, Vision Pro is Apple’s augmented reality headset that combines the physical and digital worlds. It made its debut in 2023. The headset uses the visionOS operating system, supports spatial computing, and is equipped with microdisplays.

Vision Pro provides spatial sound, integration with iPad and Mac applications, and Optic ID biometric identification technology. Apple positions the device as a universal tool for work, entertainment, and creativity.
