Users of Windows 10 and older versions of Windows 11 will receive a secret update in October 2024. It will allow Microsoft to remind users to update the operating system to the latest version. This is reported by TechRadar.
Patch KB5001716 was quietly installed on computers running Windows 10 and 11 version 21H2 following a major system update. In general, it was an update to the Windows Update tool.
“When this update is installed, Windows may attempt to download and install feature updates to your device if it is approaching or has reached the end of support for your currently installed Windows version,” Microsoft's website says.
KB5001716 also states that after installing the update, Windows may periodically display notifications about issues that may interfere with Windows Update. And, of course, users will start receiving notifications about the end of support for Windows 10 and about outdated versions of Windows 11.
As a reminder, Microsoft will officially stop supporting Windows 10 in October 2025. In order to receive security updates, you will have to pay for them, and this amount will increase every year.
