Warner Bros. has big plans for the Harry Potter universe. A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is already in development. In addition, the game will be plotfully linked to the HBO series, which will be based on Rowling’s books and will restart the franchise. It was reported by Variety.

The incentive for the studio’s interest in the franchise is the last year’s success of Hogwarts Legacy, which became the best-selling game of 2023. As of October 2024, the game’s sales exceeded 30 million copies.

Warner Bros. Games also released Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions in August 2024, as well as a remaster of the Lego Harry Potter game collection. The company has also licensed several mobile games. And the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is one of the company’s biggest priorities now.

“We have known for some time that fans are looking for more things in this world, and so we’re spending a lot of time thinking about that,” says president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, David Haddad. “Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep ‘Harry Potter’ fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them.”

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zazlaw confirmed earlier this year that the Harry Potter TV show is due to be released in 2026, and casting for the main characters, such as Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, has already begun. Meanwhile, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is unlikely to be released before 2027 or 2028.

Regarding J.K. Rowling’s future involvement, Haddad said that the writer is not directly involved in any plans related to the universe outside of the books.
