AMD has officially unveiled the previously announced Ryzen 7 9800X3D chip. This is the first desktop model with the Zen 5 architecture that has an additional 3D V-Cache. As with the 8-core Ryzen 7000X3D chips, the L3 capacity has also been increased by 64 MB. However, the new processors use a second-generation X3D buffer, which is physically located under the CCD (Core Complex Die) computing chip, and not on its surface, as it was the case in the past.

This layout should make it easier to cool the computing cores, which will now be in direct contact with the processor’s heat spreader cover again without an additional “insulating” layer in the form of 3D V-Cache.

This approach immediately made it possible to significantly increase the operating frequencies of Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The chip received the 4.7/5.2 GHz formula. As a reminder, the previous Ryzen 7 7800X3D offered 4.2/5.0 GHz. So, the base frequency is increased by 500 MHz at once, and the maximum frequency is increased by 200 MHz. Only thanks to this acceleration, Ryzen 7 9800X3D will significantly add to multi-threaded tasks. Improvements are also expected in games. AMD offered some results of their own research.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs. Ryzen 7 7800X3D games performance

The developers claim that the advantage of Ryzen 7 9800X3D over its predecessor Ryzen 7 7800X3D will be from 1% (Cyberpunk 2077) to 26% (Hogwarts Legacy). According to the results of tests in 40 projects, an average acceleration of 8% was recorded.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs. Core Ultra 9 285K

AMD also did not miss the opportunity to mock its competitor by comparing the gaming performance of systems running Ryzen 7 9800X and Core Ultra 9 285K. These figures show disappointing results for Intel. AMD’s new product outperforms the opponent’s top chip by 1-59%, and the average advantage is 20%.

However, independent assessments are definitely needed here, as producers often exaggerate in such marketing materials, making wishful thinking. For example, we paid attention to the results in Cyberpunk 2077. According to reviews, in this project, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D was about a third (30-35%) ahead of the Core Ultra 9 285K. According to AMD’s charts, in this game, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is only 1% ahead of its predecessor, while compared to the Core Ultra 9 285K, we can already see the claimed advantage of 59%. So unbiased research is definitely needed here to put all the dots in perspective.

Despite the nuances, the fact remains that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be the fastest gaming processor, and AMD can rightfully use this definition for its new model.

In addition to its outstanding gaming performance, Ryzen 7 9800X3D may also be of interest to enthusiasts who are ready to experiment with overclocking. For the first time, chips with 3D V-Cache have an unlocked boost factor, which allows you to further accelerate the CPU. This is great news that will further increase interest in the “gaming king”.

AMD unveils Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor: the owner of gaming hearts for $479

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is scheduled to start selling on November 7, while the results of independent reviews will be available a day earlier on November 6. AMD has already decided on the recommended price of Ryzen 7 9800X3D – $479. This is $30 higher than the Ryzen 7 7800X3D’s starting price tag in 2023.

By the way, the 8-core model of the previous generation has recently risen significantly in price in Ukraine. When preparing the next PC of the Month, we noticed that the retail price of Ryzen 7 7800X3D increased from the equivalent of $400 (July-August) to $510-530 at the end of October. We are expecting the launch of Ryzen 7 9800X3D, relying on a rational price balance.
