Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a major reorganization of Gemini, Assistant, and Search.

Previously, the Gemini development team was part of the Google Knowledge & Information division, which also includes Search, Advertising, Geo (maps), and Commerce. Now Gemini will be part of Google’s DeepMind division.

Sundar Pichai says that bringing the teams closer together will improve feedback, allow for quicker implementation of new models in Gemini, and accelerate new product development.

Meanwhile, the teams working on assistants for devices will move to the Pixel/Android Platforms and Devices department. In addition, Prabhakar Raghavan, the head of Advertising and Search, also called Knowledge & Information, is leaving the position of senior vice president and will “return to his computer science roots and take on the role of Chief Technologist, Google.”

In this role, he’ll partner closely with me and Google leads to provide technical direction and leadership and grow our culture of tech excellence, Sundar Pichai says.

Raghavan has been in charge of advertising since 2018 and was promoted to head of Google Search and Assistant in 2020. Nick Fox, who was a member of Raghavan’s leadership team, will replace him as head of Google’s Search, Advertising, Geolocation, and Commerce divisions. According to Pichai, Fox helped launch products such as Google Fi and RCS messaging.
