The famous Italian brand Prada and Axiom Space have presented the design of a spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III mission to the Moon. Experts have been working on a design that can protect astronauts from the harsh space environment and enable human exploration of the Moon’s south pole.

The design of the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) spacesuit was presented during the International Astronautical Congress in Milan.

“I’m very proud of the result we’re showing today, which is just the first step in a long-term collaboration with Axiom Space,” said Lorenzo Bertelli, Director of Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility at Prada Group.

At the same time, Axiom Space said that the teams have rethought the development of spacesuits, opening up new ways to innovative solutions and applying a modern approach to AxEMU design.

“We have broken the mold. The Axiom Space-Prada partnership has set a new foundational model for cross-industry collaboration, further expanding what’s possible in commercial space,” stated Axiom Space president Matt Ondler.

The suit will be made of white material that reflects heat and protects astronauts from extreme temperatures and lunar dust. It provides increased flexibility, performance and safety.

The spacesuit is designed for both men and women. Astronauts will be able to perform spacewalks for at least eight hours. The AxEMU will be equipped with several backup systems and an onboard diagnostic system to ensure the safety of the crew.

The development will also have systems to meet research needs and expand scientific capabilities. AxEMU has been tested and modeled with a wide range of astronauts and engineers.
