Homebrew plugin Junk Store – which allows you to run games from Epic and GOG on Steam Deck – may appear on Steam. This was reported by PC Gamer.

The Junk Store will allow owners of Valve’s Steam Deck portable console to launch games from third-party stores directly in game mode without switching to desktop mode or other third-party launchers. Junk Store is already available as part of the Decky Loader homebrew launcher and is free there. But you will have to pay for the transition to Steam, and this is quite justified, given the cost of developing separate software.

“This is a completely rebuilt product, using different technologies,” the developers write. “The code is not open source. We have had to reimplement everything that Decky provided and more. We need funding to hire developers to provide the features the community wants.”

The developer clarifies that although the Junk Store page on Steam has already been approved, it’s another matter to check the software itself. Compared to other software on Steam, such as the Wallpaper Engine, Junk Store is a more complicated case. It won’t just allow you to install games from competitors’ stores on Valve hardware; it will be the first product on Steam to change the functionality of the Steam software itself.

“It should not be taken for granted that Junk Store might be the first plugin for Steam that could make it into the Steam store,” the developers stated. “Valve is under no obligation to allow this and we will make sure we do the best job possible with our available resources. This could set a precedent and we would prefer that to be a good one rather than a bad one.”

It is possible that Valve will close the Junk Store during the approval process. On the other hand, Valve is also known for its good attitude towards amateur development, as it happened with the Half-Life remake – Black Mesa.
