The Skoda Elroq electric car may not turn the world upside down and make another revolution. But it should definitely become truly “popular” and very massive: positioning in a popular class, a well-known brand, a wide range of different versions, and a fairly reasonable price. That’s it in a nutshell. And in detail, then…
New Skoda Elroq electric car: popular cross-format, optimal dimensions
The simplest way to describe Skoda Elroq is to say that it looks like a Skoda Karoq, but with an electric motor. That is, we have another C-SUV crossover with typical and expected dimensions for a model of this segment: length – almost 4.49 meters; width – 1.88 meters; height – 1.63 meters. For each of these parameters, the new Skoda Elroq electric car is ahead of the Skoda Karoq, but literally by a few centimeters. Only the wheelbase is significantly longer: we have 2.765 meters.
At the same time, the new Skoda Elroq electric crossover is completely different. It is built on the MEV platform, which provides for the main rear-wheel drive with one electric motor, but it is also possible to create versions with all-wheel drive and two electric motors. Suspensions are independent “all around” (no beam at the back!); however, MEVs have no escape from rear drum brakes.
Even visually, the Skoda Elroq is very original, because it is the first model with a new design of the Tech Deck Face front end: two-story optics, a strip between the headlights (can be illuminated), no logo – now only the name of the Skoda brand. Also note that only 19-21-inch wheels are available for the new electric vehicle.
Everything looks as if the Skoda Elroq electric car was supposed to be the successor to the Skoda Karoq: it comes in a similar class, offers an increase in size, and a new corporate design. It also has an electric drive system, which was relevant a year or two ago. However, with the current trends of declining interest in electric drives, it is not exclusive that two models coexist side by side: a similar class and format, but completely different types of engines.
Choose from three batteries, rear or all-wheel drive, two additional versions
From the start of its career, the Skoda Elroq electric crossover is ready to offer three main versions, which are simply denoted by numbers – 50, 60, 85.
The base Skoda Elroq 50 electric vehicle is equipped with a battery with a nominal/usable capacity of 55/52 kWh and one electric motor (125 kW or 170 hp) on the rear axle. The promised range is 370 km on the WLTP cycle, and the electric vehicle can receive current from a Wallbox with a capacity of up to 11 kW or from DC “fast chargers” with a capacity of up to 145 kW.
The Skoda Elroq 60 electric crossover has a slightly larger battery with a nominal/usable capacity of 63/59 kWh. This should be enough for 400 kilometers on the WLTP cycle. In addition to the increase in battery capacity, the power of the electric motor has also increased – now 150 kW or 204 hp; however, the rear-wheel drive is still unchanged. And the “fast charging” capabilities have also been added: DC power up to 165 kW is accepted.
Finally, the maximum variant is the Skoda Elroq 85. It’s probably not hard to guess that this is again about increasing the battery capacity: we have a nominal/usable capacity of 82/77 kWh, which promises up to 560 km of range (WLTP). Also, the power of the electric motor has increased significantly – up to 210 kW or 286 hp, which allows this electric vehicle to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and reach a maximum of 180 km/h. Finally, the high-speed charging capabilities have been improved again: the Skoda Elroq 85 electric crossover can receive up to 175 kW.
By the way, it is worth noting the announcement of the Skoda Elroq 85x modification. It is already clear that such an electric vehicle will receive all-wheel drive with two electric motors with a total capacity of about 300 hp; however, there are no exact technical data yet. Details will be announced later, closer to the start of sales of this particular modification of the Skoda Elroq 85x, which will enter the market later than all of the above.
However, from the start of sales, two additional special versions of the Skoda Elroq electric car will be available. These are the First Edition version with the most luxurious equipment and the Sportline version with additional black glossy decor, sports steering wheel and seats, as well as a stiffer suspension and reduced ground clearance (the latter only for Skoda Elroq 85 or 85x).
There is a 13-inch touchscreen display in the cabin, and Simply Clever in the trunk
Finally, a few words about the interior, which seems to be trying to combine attractive design, environmental friendliness and practicality. The classically shaped front panel is the basis for numerous physical buttons and a 13-inch touchscreen display, and the center console is made on two levels with a deep niche for bags and things. The interior is finished with ECONYL coating and a lot of recycled materials. For rear passengers, plenty of space is promised and ventilation deflectors with a separate “climate” zone are offered.
Of course, we shouldn’t forget about the trunk: 470 to 1580 liters of space, several shelves and clips for things, a grid for storing the charging cable, numerous accessories… The Simply Clever approach works!
And finally, it is promised that the starting price of the new Skoda Elroq electric crossover will start at €33,000, which is at the level of mid-range versions of the Skoda Karoq on the European market. Sales of the new model will start in the first quarter of 2025.
