The SAG-AFTRA actors’ guild has announced a strike against the MOBA Leage of Legends and calls on its members to stop any work with the developers. This was reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
SAG-AFTRA explains that Formosa Interactive, which is working on the game, “tried to sabotage” the union’s strike against game developers who use AI instead of actors.
Formosa Interactive, a division of the audio company Formosa Group, is engaged in the voice acting of League of Legends by Riot Games.
The union accuses Formosa Interactive, which has signed an agreement with the union and is one of the members of the negotiating team, of wanting to cancel one of its games affected by the video game industry strike.
It is also reported that the company tried to hire non-unionized performers through a shell company for the same game.
Formosa Group stated that it did not agree with any of SAG-AFTRA’s allegations and that the company had not taken any actions to violate the rights of union members.
“We believe the strike of League of Legends, a game unrelated to the union’s claims, is not appropriate. We stand with developers, publishers, platform holders, and talent to support global game development in a way that is safe and ethical for all,” says Formosa Group.
Riot Games also responded to these accusations, but the company decided to immediately distance itself from the conflict and noted that it had nothing to do with the complaint.
“We want to be clear: Since becoming a union project five years ago, League of Legends has only asked Formosa to engage with Union performers in the US and has never once suggested doing otherwise,” Riot Games reports.
The SAG-AFTRA strike began on July 26 this year and is still ongoing. Actors belonging to the guild refuse to work with many game development companies, such as Disney Character Voices, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts, Warner Bros. Games, and Insomniac Games.
