Meta is working on integrating chats from other messengers into WhatsApp and Messenger for users in the European Union in accordance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company has shown how it will work.
After adding third-party chats, they will be placed on the app’s home page, along with WhatsApp or Messenger chats, or they can be placed separately in the appropriate folder. In addition, as soon as this feature is added, the user will receive a notification offering to add chats from other apps.
The company claims that it has gone beyond the basic features required for interoperable messaging within the DMA. The developers are working on such features as reactions to messages, the ability to highlight messages for reply, typing and reading indicators.
Next year, the developers promise to implement group chats for users of different messengers. Calls between messengers are planned for 2027.
Users will start to see the third-party chat option when the first partner messengers develop, test, and launch the necessary technology on their side.
