TSMC conducted the first test production of chips at a factory in Arizona, USA. The results of this test showed that the level of production corresponds to the company’s factories in Taiwan. This was reported by Bloomberg.
The company said it started producing the chip on its advanced 4-nanometer process back in April. The yield rate – the number of usable chips from a single production process – is reaching the level of similar facilities in Tainan, southern Taiwan.
Representatives of the company said in an email that the Arizona project is “proceeding as planned with good progression,” but did not comment on the yield rate.
Production of chips at the Arizona factory was supposed to start in 2024, but the launch was postponed to 2025 due to the lack of sufficient skilled workers.
This has raised concerns that TSMC will not be able to produce chips in the US as efficiently as it does in Taiwan, but preliminary reports from people familiar with the matter, who spoke to Bloomberg anonymously, suggest that there is no need to worry.
