Instagram is testing a potentially important change. The social network is turning squares in the profile grid into vertical rectangles. Some users have already noticed this test, writes The Verge.

“The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical,” said Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, discussing the testing on the social network. “It’s either 4 by 3 in a photo or 9 by 16 in a video, and cropping it down to square is pretty brutal.”

He also said that “squares are left over from the days when only square photos could be uploaded to Instagram.” However, the restriction was lifted in 2015.

Adam Mosseri added that profile changes can be annoying for people who have spent a lot of time designing their profile. Nevertheless, the Instagram CEO is committed to doing something better for content.

At the same time, Instagram spokeswoman Christine Pai said that the vertical profile grid is being tested among a small number of people.

“This is a limited test, and we’ll be listening to feedback from the community before rolling anything out further,” she added.

By the way, in July, Meta started providing access to a new AI Studio tool that will allow Instagram users to create their own AI versions.
