The X platform, formerly known as Twitter, announced on its official channel that it will cease operations in Brazil, but the service will remain available to users in the country.
The announcement comes amid a legal battle with Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who tried to block certain accounts on X as part of an investigation into election disinformation.
The post of the X account states that Moraes threatened our legal representative in Brazil with arrest if we do not comply with his censorship orders.
“As a result, to protect the safety of our staff, we have made the decision to close our operation in Brazil, effective immediately. The X service remains available to the people of Brazil,” the post also says.
Supporters of former far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro criticized Moraes and called for his impeachment. Bolsonaro lost the election in 2022, and Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court banned him from running for office for eight years, claiming that he tried to disrupt the election through his allegations of fraud.
“The people of Brazil have a choice to make – democracy, or Alexandre de Moraes,” the post also says.
