Valve has confirmed that it will give other manufacturers of portable consoles the opportunity to use the Steam Deck operating system – SteamOS. The company is already working to make the system work on ROG Ally. This was reported by The Verge.
In the SteamOS 3.6.9 beta update, which was released on August 8, 2024, Valve has already added support for ASUS’ ROG Ally buttons.
The company was asked if such changes were made only to support the buttons in the full version of Steam that runs on portable consoles and has Big Picture mode. The company replied that this was done so that SteamOS could be launched on new devices.
However, these changes do not mean anything yet, and ASUS will not necessarily use SteamOS on ROG Ally out of the box. Nevertheless, the first steps have already been taken.
In addition, the Valve representative also noted that a lot of work needs to be done to make SteamOS work out of the box on other consoles.
Valve also commented on the possibility of running Windows on Steam Deck, which the company promised earlier.
“As for Windows, we’re preparing to make the remaining Windows drivers for Steam Deck OLED available (you might have seen that we are prepping firmware for the Bluetooth driver). There’s no update on the timing for dual boot support—it’s still a priority, but we haven’t been able to get to it just yet,” said a company representative.
