For quite some time now, more and more details about the Pixel 9 smartphone lineup have been leaked online. In fact, there are almost no surprises left before the official announcement. And one of the most interesting moments, and already officially, was the “replenishment” of the lineup with not one, but two models with the Pro index – Google Pixel 9 Pro and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Both models have a similar appearance, which has refreshed the Pixel quite a bit. Thus, the glass body consists of Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, and a polished aluminum frame separates them. In both cases, the latter is flat and more in line with competitors (who, however, have begun to abandon shiny bezels).
There are four case colors to choose from: Porcelain, Rose Quartz, Hazel, and Obsidian. In all cases, the back panels are matte.
The camera unit hasn’t changed its location, but it has also updated its shape. Now the protrusion does not connect the two sides of the body, but is a separate “island” on the back panel.
The housings of both models are also IP68 water and dust resistant.
The approximate dimensions and weight of the new models are as follows:
Google Pixel 9 Pro — 152.4×71.1×7.62 mm, 199 grams;
Google Pixel 9 Pro XL — 162.6 × 76.2 × 7.62 mm, 221 grams.
Both smartphones use Super Actua display (LTPO) screens with an aspect ratio of 20:9, refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, and peak local brightness of up to 3,000 cd/m² (up to 2,000 when playing HDR).
Between the two models, the displays differ only in diagonal and, accordingly, in resolution – 6.3 inches, 2856×1280 pixels (495 PPI) in Google Pixel 9 Pro, versus 6.8 inches, 2992×1344 pixels (486 PPI) in Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Smartphones will also offer quick unlocking by scanning the owner’s face or using a fingerprint sensor.
There is also support for stereo sound and spatial audio. Each of the models has three microphones for conversations, noise cancellation, and sound recording.
Of course, the new smartphones also received updated Google Tensor G4 processors, 16 GB of RAM, and now UFS 4.0 storage with capacities ranging from 128 GB to 1 TB. There is support for 5G (with room for one physical Nano SIM and an eSIM), Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, proprietary Ultra-Wideband for finding a lost device, and several navigation system options (two GNSS bands, GPS, GLONASS, Galileo).
More interestingly, the Google Pixel can now offer Emergency SOS satellite communications. As with the iPhone, the feature will initially work only in the United States, with support gradually expanding to other countries. Additionally, smartphones can measure body temperature.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL will be running Android 14 at launch, and, of course, with Google Gemini already at the system kernel level, with all the feature updates. The smartphones also promise at least 7 years of support.
The cameras of both models are the same. The main unit offers three sensors:
- wide-angle – 50 MP, ƒ/1.7, 25 mm, optical image stabilization;
- ultra-wide-angle – 48 MP, ƒ/1.7, 123° capture angle;
- periscope telephoto – 48 MP, ƒ/2.8, 113 mm, 5× optical zoom.
And now Google Pixel can record video in up to 8K resolution at 30 frames per second.
The front sensor has dramatically increased its resolution. up to 42 MP with ƒ/2.2 and a focal length of 17 mm.
In addition to displays and dimensions, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL also share battery life and charging capabilities. Thus, the smaller smartphone has a 4,700 mAh battery, supports wired charging with a capacity of up to 27 W, and induction charging with a capacity of up to 21 W. Pixel 9 Pro XL, on the other hand, has a larger 5,060 mAh battery, supports 37W wired charging and 23W induction charging. Both models have support for reverse charging. Of course, there are no power supplies included.
The prices are predictable: in the US, the Pixel 9 Pro costs from $999 to $1,449, and the Pixel 9 Pro XL costs from $1,099 to $1,549, depending on the storage capacity. Buyers will also receive a Gemini Advanced subscription for a year (then it will be $239/year). Pre-orders started immediately after the presentation, and the new products will be available in stores on August 22.
