Microsoft has signed an agreement with Samsung for the latter to manufacture and deliver “hundreds of thousands” of micro-OLED displays used for mixed reality headsets. Other details also hint that the company is preparing a competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro. This was reported by Windows Central.

It is reported that the new headset will be designed for mass consumers. It will allow consuming various types of content, such as games and movies, opening apps in the space around you, and so on. This is different from the HoloLens headset, which is mostly used in professional fields.

A recent patent from Microsoft also hints that the headset could look similar to Apple’s Vision Pro. It will have OLED displays and through cameras to simulate an augmented reality experience.

It is also reported that the headset is likely to run on the Android operating system rather than Windows. Microsoft believes that UWP apps and the Windows Core system used in HoloLens are outdated. Therefore, it is looking for new opportunities to implement mixed reality.

They will not completely abandon their own operating system either. Microsoft is currently working on a solution that will allow to run Windows imitation through the cloud.

The project, codenamed Williams Bay, is designed to allow users to place various Windows applications in the space and interact with them as if they were running locally. This is similar to how iPad apps work on Vision Pro.

So far, there is no other information about the new headset, but it will be ready no earlier than 2025, and its presentation will probably take place in 2026.
