Warner Bros. is considering the possibility of exiting the gaming business, including selling it in whole or in part. Two weeks before these reports, the company acquired Player First Games studio, the developers of MultiVersus. This was reported by Insider Gaming.
It is reported that by selling the gaming business, the company will be able to avoid potential lawsuits from various debt investors. So far, no final decisions have been made.
This is not the first time that Warner Bros. is considering exiting the gaming business. In 2020, rumors circulated that Microsoft wanted to acquire the company’s portfolio of games, which includes Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC Comics games, and others.
Earlier, it was also reported that the company wanted to move away from single-player games and rely on game services. After that, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leage was released, but the game did not meet expectations and led to a loss of about $200 million in revenue.
The company’s gaming division, Warner Bros. Games, was founded in 2004 and has published games from other studios, including acquired ones, such as Monolith Productions, TT Games, NetherRealm Studios, Rocksteady Studios, and many others.
Since then, the company has produced the Arkham series about Batman, many Mortal Kombat installments, another fighting game series about DC Comics heroes Injustice, Hogwarts Legacy, LEGO games, and many others.
