Google is abandoning the Chromecast brand and removing the adapter from sale. Instead, the company will start selling a new product, Google TV Streamer, which will compete with premium set-top boxes like Apple TV.
The company introduced the first generation of Chromecast in 2013. Since then, over 11 years on the market, more than 100 million adapters have been sold, but after such a long history, the device is being discontinued. Chromecasts will still be available for some time, but they will be the last of the manufactured devices.
At the same time, a new set-top box for TVs, Google TV Streamer, is already available for pre-order for $99.99. This is twice as expensive as Chromecast, whose latest generation cost about $50.
The set-top box will support Gemini, 4K video streaming, and will serve as a smart home hub and control other devices from the company, among other things.
TV Streamer will use artificial intelligence to manage content recommendations across all services. The company notes that owners of the set-top box will be able to create watchlists with recommendations for each family member individually. AI can also be used to summarize, review, and categorize content by season.
