Google has confirmed plans to implement web monetization in Chrome. This will allow website owners to receive micropayments for their content as an additional way to generate revenue. This was reported by BleepingComputer.
Google is confident that this will allow content creators and website owners to be rewarded for their work without relying solely on advertising or subscriptions.
Website owners will be able to make payments voluntary or mandatory, for example, charging 2 cents for each new page.
Web monetization support can be added to any web page using the rel=”monetization” HTML element. This tag informs the browser that the site supports web monetization and indicates the payment processor to use.
“Notably, Web Monetization offers two unique features—small payments and no user interaction—users are paying/tipping for the content while they consume it. It extends the HTML element by introducing rel=”monetization”, write to Google.
With the help of web monetization, website owners can express their interest in receiving payments, while the visitor retains full control over how much money they are willing to pay for the content.
The feature is still under development by the Web Platform Incubator community group and is not a W3C standard.
