Apple’s iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia operating systems will have a new Recovered album in the Photos app to help recover lost or damaged photos and videos. This was reported by 9to5Mac.

With newer operating systems, your device will scan for potentially damaged photos or videos. If any are found, the Recovered album will appear in the Utilities section of the app.

Note that the Recovered album is different from the Recently Deleted album, where deleted photos are available for 30 days before they are permanently deleted.

There are several ways a photo or video can be lost and/or damaged. For example, this can happen if the database becomes corrupted or if you take a photo but don’t save it properly to your Photos library. Third-party apps that are authorized to manage your library can also cause content loss and/or corruption.

This new feature in iOS 18 comes after a database corruption bug was discovered in iOS 17.5 that resulted in deleted photos. At the time, Apple emphasized that the problem was rare and affected a small number of users and photos.
