The 74th Berlin International Film Festival in February will screen a new feature film “Editorial” by Ukrainian director Roman Bondarchuk. It was reported by Arthouse Traffic.

The film is presented in the Forum program curated by the Arsenal, the Berlin Institute for Film and Video Art, which focuses on the search for new forms of cinematic language. The film will be released in Ukrainian cinemas in the fall of 2024.

The film tells the story of Yura, a young researcher at a natural history museum who tries to save rare animals from destruction. He witnesses a forest being set on fire and takes photos of the arsonists and his article to the local newspaper. But no one here is interested in nature or justice.

The hero’s naïve vision of the world is destroyed in a whirlwind of fake news, corruption schemes, and rigged elections. He needs to find out who he is – a representative of a half-extinct species of “real man” or an ordinary loser?

Dmytro Bagnenko, a journalist and now a soldier in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, made his debut in the lead role. The film was directed and co-written by Roman Bondarchuk, known for his previous films Volcano and Ukrainian Sheriffs.

The Editorial Office continues the director’s series of films exploring the South of Ukraine. The film was shot in Kherson and Kherson region, including the now-occupied Oleshky Sands. The shooting was completed just a few months before the full-scale invasion.
