Discord has laid off 170 employees, which is 17% of the total staff. The layoffs will affect various departments of the company, writes The Verge.

CEO Jason Citron spoke about the layoffs in a memo sent to employees and at a general meeting. According to him, this is a necessary step to “sharpen our focus and improve how we work together to provide greater agility to our organization.”

Citron also said that since the beginning of the pandemic, the Covid service has grown too fast and expanded its staff too much, which has led to less efficiency.

“We grew quickly and expanded our workforce even faster, increasing by 5x since 2020. As a result, we took on more projects and became less efficient in how we operated.”

Currently, Discord is still not a profitable service, despite the fact that the company is in a good financial condition. However, according to people familiar with the matter, the service is expected to start generating revenue this year.
