Lenovo unveils new 16-inch Legion gaming laptops

Lenovo has unveiled a new line of 9th-generation Lenovo Legion gaming laptops at CES 2024, including new 16-inch models:

• Lenovo Legion 7i, Lenovo Legion 5i and Lenovo Legion Slim 5 are designed for gamers who need a laptop that can handle both gaming and STEM applications.
• Lenovo Legion 9i is positioned as a solution for those who need high performance in gaming and content creation.
• Lenovo Legion Pro 7i and Lenovo Legion Pro 5i — for gamers who value design over high FPS. 

The new gaming lineup is based on Lenovo’s LA family of proprietary hardware AI chips. They were first unveiled at CES 2023, but now the company has released more powerful versions that it says provide Lenovo gaming laptops with higher FPS and better power efficiency.

Lenovo Legion 9i

The Lenovo Legion 9i is powered by an Intel Core Gen i9-14900HX processor combined with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics. The new model can dissipate up to 230W of heat (TDP 230W), is intelligently controlled by the latest LA3-P AI chip, and features a Lenovo PureSight Mini-LED display with a 3.2K resolution (3200×2000 pixels), 16:10 aspect ratio, and 165Hz variable refresh rate.

The Legion 9i features 64GB of 5600MHz DDR5 RAM with up to 2TB of 4th Generation PCIe SSD storage and a 99.99Wh battery.

The Lenovo TrueStrike keyboard has RGB backlighting for each key and a 1.5 mm travel. The laptop weighs from 2.5 kg and has a top cover made of pressed carbon fiber, the pattern of which is unique to each device.

Lenovo Legion 7i, Legion 5i та Legion Slim 5

The Lenovo Legion 7i and Legion 5i models use up to an Intel Core i9 14900HX processor, while the Legion Slim 5 is built on the AMD Ryzen 8040 series of chips. All Legion laptops are available with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPUs, which support NVIDIA RTX AI scaling technology for faster frame rates, AI-enabled Max-Q technology to optimize performance and efficiency for gaming, as well as creative and resource-intensive tasks.

Also, all Legion laptops have up to 32 GB of DDR5 5600 MHz RAM and a 4th generation M.2 2280 PCIe SSD with a capacity of up to 1 TB. The Lenovo Legion 7i has a Wi-Fi 7 module, a TrueStrike keyboard with RGB backlighting for each key, a Copilot button and a 1.5 mm key travel, while the Lenovo Legion 5i and Slim 5 are equipped with a Wi-Fi 6E module, a TrueStrike keyboard with 4-zone RGB and the same 1.5 mm key travel.

New this year is the Lenovo Legion Coldfront: Hyper, available in Lenovo Legion 7i and Legion 5i models. This is a new technology in which the manufacturer has changed the approach to the cooling system: hot air from the chips now passes through a channel-like hyperbaric chamber in the center of the laptop. The bottom lid is designed to prevent the hot air coming out through the rear vent from mixing with the cold air that is captured by the two fans. According to Lenovo, this ensures optimized heat transfer, keeping the laptop’s hardware cool and resulting in higher frame rates in games. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to achieve maximum power up to 175 W in extreme mode on the Lenovo Legion 7i and up to 190 W of maximum TDP on the Legion 5i.

Legion laptops are equipped with PureSight displays with factory-calibrated color. The Lenovo Legion 7i is available with a 16-inch IPS display with a 3.2K resolution (3200×2000 pixels), 16:10 aspect ratio, 165Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color space support, and 450 nits of brightness for extra clarity when gaming, designing, or creating content.

Also available are configurations with a 16-inch WQXGA display, 16:10 aspect ratio, 240Hz refresh rate, and 100% sRGB color space coverage for users who require higher refresh rates. This display option is also available for Lenovo Legion 5i and Lenovo Legion Slim 5.

Lenovo Legion Pro

The new Legion Pro laptops are powered by 14th Generation Intel Core i9-14900HX processors with up to 32GB of DDR5 5600 MHz RAM, 16-inch PureSight WQXGA IPS displays with 16:10 aspect ratio, up to 240Hz refresh rate, 500 nits brightness, and up to 2TB of PCIe SSD storage. The updated PureSight displays have 100% color coverage according to the DCI-P3 standard.

All new Lenovo Legion Pro 7i laptops feature Coldfront: Vapor vapor chamber cooling technology regardless of configuration, enabling the laptop’s NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU to reach a maximum TDP of up to 250W in extreme mode. The Coldfront cooling system in Lenovo Legion Pro 5i notebooks also delivers 215W TDP in extreme mode for the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card.

Lenovo claims that performance is further enhanced by the combination of AI chips in the Legion Pro 7i and the LA1 AI chip in the Legion Pro 5i. They power Lenovo AI Engine+ technology, which uses machine learning software running through Lenovo Vantage to monitor FPS in games and dynamically adjust power routing, fans, and many other settings to maintain high performance regardless of the usage scenario.

The TrueStrike keyboards in the Legion Pro series feature four key switches and Legion Spectrum RGB backlighting for each key on the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i or optional 4-zone Spectrum RGB on the Legion Pro 5i. The new Windows Copilot key is also available on every Legion Pro 7i keyboard.
