A breakthrough in artificial intelligence could dramatically change battery technology. This opinion was expressed by Microsoft, writes Independent.

The company used AI to test more than 32 million materials that could potentially be used in battery production. Eventually, the specialists managed to create a material that could change the way batteries work.

The new type of battery can reduce the need for lithium by about 70%. But this is not the only important aspect. Another is that AI can be used to make real breakthroughs. And they can be made faster than ever before.

Last year, Microsoft released a system called Azure Quantum Elements, designed to use AI and other advanced technologies for scientific discoveries. It is already used by companies, including pharmaceuticals.

But Microsoft wants to prove that this technology can identify new material that can be synthesized and will be useful. The company has focused on batteries in part because they are needed in everyday life.

Microsoft used an AI system and collaborated with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to identify a material that did not exist in nature. It showed the potential to create resource-efficient batteries.

The scientists synthesized the material and made a working prototype, which demonstrated that it really works in practice and that it has the potential to become a new way of storing energy.
