At CES 2024, ASUS has unveiled the new ROG Zephyrus G14 and ROG Zephyrus G16 gaming laptops, which update the line of popular Republic of Gamers models. Compared to the previous generation, their design has been completely updated, it has become even more laconic and less and less resembles gaming models. Instead of a perforated display unit cover that could have had an AniMatrix LED panel, the updated G14 and G16 now have only one strip of white LEDs on it, called Slash Lighting.

The Zephyrus G14 is a 14-inch gaming laptop that first debuted in 2020 and has already undergone one major redesign and two platform changes. This year’s version also has a thinner body – only 1.59 cm. The weight has also decreased slightly, and is now 1.5 kg.

The ROG Zephyrus G16 is a 16-inch model that is even thinner than the smaller version – 1.49 cm. Its weight is, of course, higher, but 1.85 kg is an excellent figure for a laptop with this screen diagonal. This makes it an interesting option for both stationary work and traveling to the office.

Interestingly, ASUS now uses a single sheet of aluminum with precision CNC machining for the keyboard panel of the new laptops, which made it possible to cut holes for the keys with a distance of only 1.7 mm between the keycaps, that is, to accommodate larger buttons. The key travel is also 1.7 mm, as in most thin ASUS laptops, and from my experience, this should be a pretty comfortable keyboard.

It is also worth noting the new touchpad, which is almost 28% larger and is also covered with glass for a more pleasant tactile experience.

In the photo, you can see that the updated G14 and G16 also have a new speaker arrangement on the sides of the keyboard, but there are actually more of them. Both models are equipped with 6 speakers, including 4 high-frequency and 2 low-frequency, and support Dolby Atmos spatial sound technology.

Despite their different sizes, the laptops have the same layout and a similar set of ports. The G14 has a microSD (UHS-II) card slot, USB 3.2 Gen2 Type A and USB 3.2 Gen2 Type C with DP on the right side, and an ASUS Slim Power Jack, HDMI 2.1, USB 4 with DP + PD, and a 3.5mm Audio Jack on the left. The only difference between the G16 and the G16 is the presence of a standard SD (UHS-II) card slot instead of microSD.

ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 will be available in only two colors: Eclipse Gray and Platinum White.

The G14 and G16 are the first ASUS laptops to feature ROG Nebula Display OLED panels. The Zephyrus G14 will have a version with a 3K display (120 Hz refresh rate), and the Zephyrus G16 will have a 2.5K display (240 Hz refresh rate), 16:10 aspect ratio, VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, and a contrast ratio of 1 000 000:1.

Despite the similarity in design and overall performance, the ROG Zephyrus G14 and G16 have another key difference in addition to size: they are built on different platforms.

The G14 uses up to an AMD Ryzen 9 8940H processor, up to 32 GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to a 1 TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD. In addition, the maximum discrete graphics option in this model can be NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 with a maximum TGP (Total Graphics Power) of 90 watts.

Discrete graphics can also be more powerful here, with the top-of-the-line configuration featuring NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 with a maximum TGP of 115 watts.

Both models offer WiFi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3 wireless modules.

The G14 will be charged from a 180W power supply, while the G16 can be recharged from 200W and 240W power supplies. Both models support fast charging, which allows you to replenish the battery charge by 50% in 30 minutes.
