Mickey Mouse will be the hero of two horror films, Disney has lost the rights to the character

Mickey Mouse will become the hero of at least two horror films. The projects were announced after Disney’s copyright on an early depiction of the iconic character expired in the United States, writes CNN.

It refers to the image of Mickey Mouse from the 1928 cartoon Steamboat Willie. On January 1, it became public domain of the United States. So now director Jamie Bailey has announced a horror movie featuring a prominent mouse.

The project is called Mickey’s Mouse Trap and tells the story of a group of friends who are being chased by someone wearing a mouse mask. The director even presented a teaser trailer for his upcoming horror movie.

The second project will be directed by Stephen LaMorte. Production of his film is due to start this spring.

“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” said the director. “I can’t wait to unleash our twisted take on this beloved character to the world.

This is not the first time that directors have realized projects based on classic characters. For example, last year we released a horror movie Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. Its production became possible after Alan Milne’s children’s book Winnie the Pooh became public domain.
