Signal is introducing a new feature for users that allows them to create custom names for themselves so that they don’t have to share their number with others, writes The Verge.

The feature is currently under testing, and the developers warn that users may experience various problems with it. Jim O’Leary, Vice President of Development, said that the feature can now be considered at the “pre-testing” stage.

Similarly to Telegram, you will still need a mobile number to create an account in Signal. In the future, users will be able to share their account using a link or QR code, and hide their number.

The official release of the new feature is planned for early 2024.
