Minecraft, the iconic sandbox video game, has reached another milestone with over 300 million copies sold, further cementing its position as the best-selling game of all time. On the eve of the game’s 15th anniversary, Helen Chiang, chairman of Mojang Studios, expressed her surprise at this achievement, especially considering the game’s humble beginnings, reports The Verge.

The announcement was made during Minecraft Live 2023, a live event dedicated to sharing news, updates, and community engagement. One of the highlights of this event is the voting segment, where players choose a new creature to be introduced to the game. This year, a crab, an armadillo, and a penguin were offered to choose from.

To give some context to Minecraft’s staggering sales figure, Michael Jackson’s all-time best-selling album Thriller has sold around 70 million copies. In the field of game consoles, the PS2 is the leader, with sales of about 155 million units. Even the second most popular video game, Grand Theft Auto V, lags behind Minecraft with 185 million sales. These comparisons underscore Minecraft’s unprecedented success in the entertainment industry. Given its sustained popularity, sales of the game are expected to continue to grow.
