As the Christmas season approaches, Sony is preparing to launch sales of its updated PlayStation 5 game console. It has a new, more compact design and now essentially has one version of the case, which is designed for horizontal installation, as a separate stand for $29.99 will be required for vertical installation.
Players will have an easier time choosing between models with and without a Blu-ray drive, as the new design offers a removable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive that can be purchased later for $79.99.
The new PS5 is more than 30% smaller than previous versions, and 18% lighter with the Blu-ray drive and 24% lighter without it. The console body now has four matte covers on the sides and a glossy finish on the top, just like the previous PS5.
Other interesting updates: the front panel now contains two USB-C ports instead of one USB-C and one USB-A port, and users will immediately have access to 1 TB of game storage instead of 825 GB in existing PlayStation 5 models.
The updated PS5 will hit store shelves in the United States in November and worldwide in the following months. After the current PS5 model is exhausted, this new version will be the only one offered.
The cost of the updated PlayStation 5 in the US and Europe:
US: PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive – $499.99; PS5 Digital Edition – $449.99;
Europe: PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray drive – 549.99 euros; PS5 Digital Edition – 449.99 euros.
The package will include a horizontal stand for the new PlayStation 5 model. In addition, a new vertical stand compatible with all PS5 models will be available separately for $29.99.
Otherwise, the PlayStation 5 specifications have not changed.
