A group of fraudsters who exchanged fake iPhones and iPads for real ones and thus defrauded Apple will be sent to federal prison in the United States, reports The Verge.

We are talking about the Liao brothers – Zhimin, Zhiting and Zhiwei. For eight years, they had been running a popular scam. The total amount of damage they caused to the tech giant is estimated at $6.1 million. In 2019, the brothers were finally caught.

According to prosecutors, Zhiqin personally visited 105 Apple stores in 22 states to attempt to exchange about 720 counterfeit iPhones and iPads. Zhiqin made about 718 exchange attempts at at least 200 Apple stores in 18 states of the USA and Canada.

The court sentenced Zhimin and Zhiqin to 41 months in prison. Their wives, who were also involved in the scam, pleaded guilty and received three years’ suspended sentences. Meanwhile, the third brother, Zhiwei, is awaiting a court decision later this month.

By the way, in 2022, Apple prevented fraud in the App Store worth more than $2 billion.
