Rumors have surfaced online about Apple’s plans to release a low-cost MacBook for the education sector, which is supposed to compete with Chromebooks. The device may be released in the second half of 2024.

The new line will be separated from the Air and Pro series. The laptop case will be metal, like the older models, but the company will use “other materials” that will reduce the cost of mechanical components.

In 2019, more than 13.9 million chromebooks were shipped, while in 2020 and 2021 this figure increased to 30.4 million and 33.5 million units, respectively. The rise in popularity of chromebooks is due, in part, to the pandemic. But even after the pandemic, interest in these devices remains high. So, it is quite possible that Apple has decided to strengthen its presence in the education sector.

This is the first information about Apple’s plans, so it should be treated with a healthy dose of skepticism. However, we can discuss whether the market and Apple itself need a conditional MacBook SE.
