Mozilla has announced the upcoming launch of an open extension platform at addons.mozilla.org for the Android version of Firefox.

As you know, only a small number of select extensions are officially available for the mobile version of the browser. Mozilla is now building the infrastructure to support an open ecosystem and encourages developers to prepare for the release.

“The mobile browser has a lot of creative potential to unleash. Mozilla wants to give developers the best support possible to create modern mobile web extensions,” said Giorgio Natili, director of development for Firefox.

To support developers, the company plans to create additional guides and resources, as well as special events for the community, and has already prepared basic recommendations for desktop extension developers on how to optimize their extensions for mobile.

There is no exact launch date yet, the company will announce it in early September, but promises that it will happen before the end of this year.
