Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has officially earned $1 billion at the worldwide box office. This is the fastest Warner Bros. Pictures release to reach this milestone in just 17 days in theatres, writes The Verge referring to Variety.

The film also became the second film to reach this mark in 2023, after The Super Mario Bros. Movie. During its third weekend in the U.S., Barbie grossed $53 million, topping the box office. The total U.S. gross was $459.4 million.

To recap, Barbie’s first weekend has grossed $155 million at the U.S. box office during first weekend. This is the highest grossing film directed by a woman in U.S. box office history. The previous record was set by Anna Boden’s Captain Marvel, which grossed $153 million.

In addition, in its first weekend, the film surpassed The Super Mario Brothers at the Movies ($146 million) as the highest grossing American premiere of 2023 and reached a global box office of $33 million.
