RAFAEL Sky Sonic – an Israeli missile defense system for intercepting hypersonic missiles
Israel Defense Corporation Rafael Advanced Defense Systems told about the development of the RAFAEL Sky Sonic missile defense system, which is designed to intercept hypersonic missiles. The system will be demonstrated for the first time at the 2023 Paris Air Show in Le Bourge, which will take place on June 19-25, 2023.
The announcement of the RAFAEL Sky Sonic came just a week after Iran unveiled a purportedly hypersonic missile Fattah, “which can reach the territory of Israel in 400 seconds.”
According to the developers, the Sky Sonic interceptor is a major technological step in the field of hypersonic missile defense. Designed with exceptional maneuverability and high-speed capabilities, it effectively neutralizes hypersonic missiles traveling at ten times the speed of sound.
The technical specifications of the Sky Sonic system are currently unknown, but judging by the presented video, it is a two-stage missile that hits a hypersonic target by the method of kinetic damage. We await more details at the 2023 Paris Air Show.
We will remind that the Rafael company is behind the development of such well-known air defense systems as Iron Dome, David’s Sling and the most modern Iron Beam, the test of which took place in 2022. In addition, it is Rafael that produces one of the best ATGMs of our time – Spike. So these guys really know something about missiles.
