The NVIDIA company has officially presented another GPU-based graphics card with the Ada Lovelace architecture – GeForce RTX 4070. The model will go on sale on April 13 at a recommended price of $599.
The graphics adapter is based on the GA104-250 processor, which is produced by TSMC using a 5-nanometer process. The GPU crystal has an area of 295 mm² and contains 35.8 billion transistors. This is the same GPU used in the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti, but the current version has 5,888 active CUDA cores, 184 texture modules and 64 rasterizers. In addition, the chip includes 184 tensor cores and 48 RT-cores. The frequency formula of the GPU is 1920 / 2475 MHz.
The configuration of the memory subsystem is identical to that of the older model. The GeForce RTX 4070 has 12 GB of local RAM. The graphics card uses GDDR6X chips with an effective frequency of 21,000 MHz. At the same time, the 192-bit bus allows you to get a bandwidth of 504 GB/s. The graphics card is quite economical. The declared level of TGP is 200 W. Both 12VHPWR and 8-pin connectors will be used to connect additional power.
Today, the results of testing the capabilities of the new graphics card are already available. For a first impression, let’s use the diagrams obtained by colleagues from TechPowerUp during verification of the reference adapter. Overall, the GeForce RTX 4070 12GB performs on par with the GeForce RTX 3080 10GB and the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB. The new model has a minimal advantage in Full HD mode, parity in 1440p and is slightly inferior to the older adapter of the previous generation in 4K. The advantage over the nominal predecessor – GeForce RTX 3070 8 GB – is about 25-30%.
If we compare the capabilities of NVIDIA solutions when using ray tracing, the balance of power remains, while the AMD model has a slightly weaker position here.
The advantage of GeForce RTX 40xx models is support for Frame Generation, as well as the DLSS 3 technology implemented on its basis. In projects that support this mechanism of intelligent image scaling, GPU adapters with the Ada Lovelace architecture will receive a noticeable acceleration.
According to the test results, good energy efficiency of the new model is also noted. The real-world power consumption of 200W is really impressive, especially considering that the Radeon RX 6800 XT 16GB used around 300W in games, while the GeForce RTX 3080 10GB used around 330W under the same conditions.
NVIDIA positions the GeForce RTX 4070 12GB as the best option for gaming in 1440p mode, where the graphics card is usually able to provide more than 100 fps. The price tag of $599 seems quite high, as for the RTX xx70 model, but given the current offers in this segment, the novelty may well be suitable for quite picky gamers who are ready to spend even more.
