There is still a lot of time before the presentation of the iPhone 15 Pro and the new line of Apple smartphones in general. The company traditionally shows its new models in the fall, but leaks happen much earlier. 9to5Mac got new information and CAD images of the iPhone 15 Pro design from accessory manufacturers, details of which have been confirmed by other sources. So, for the first time, we can get a look at what the new flagship smartphone from Apple will look like.
Titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro case
Unlike the iPhone 14 Pro, the design of which differed from its predecessor only by a new cutout in the screen called Dynamic Island, the iPhone 15 Pro will stand out with a titanium body frame.
In the top models of Apple since 2017, hardened steel was used, it protected the case well during impact after a fall, but its polished coating was easily covered with scratches. The use of titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro case reduces this problem, because scratches are less noticeable on the porous surface of this metal. In addition, the specific strength of titanium is almost twice that of alloy steels, while it is much lighter.
Another update in the design of the iPhone 15 Pro is the slightly rounded edges of the frame, which should cut into the hand less, which was also one of the complaints of users of the last generation of iPhones.
Bigger camera unit
In addition to the new titanium frame, Apple will once again increase the size of the camera unit in the iPhone 15 Pro. The protrusion will become thicker, and the lenses of the camera modules will protrude even more. CAD files show that the protrusion of individual lenses has more than doubled compared to the iPhone 14 Pro cameras.
It is important to note that in the CAD files, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has a smaller camera protrusion; this could be due to the periscope camera, which insiders say will appear exclusively on the larger Pro Max model this year. This also means that the iPhone 15 Pro will have a larger camera protrusion than the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
There is no doubt that Apple will try to improve the camera modules in the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max in order to continue to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but there is still very little information about this. According to the sources, we are expecting a new sensor with technology that will “capture more light and reduce overexposure or underexposure in certain conditions.”
USB Type-C charging port
The new EU legislation will oblige Apple to release smartphones with a USB Type-C charging port next year. And although the company could formally leave its own Lightning port this year, it still decided not to postpone the inevitable. Therefore, the USB Type-C port will be featured in all iPhone 15 models.
According to the leaked images of the prototype device, the USB Type-C port has a metal frame with a ribbed texture. In typical Apple fashion, the fastest charging will be limited to Apple-certified USB Type-C cables.
Goodbye mechanical keys
In the manner of how Apple first abandoned the mechanical Home button in the iPhone 7, the iPhone 15 Pro will say goodbye to the mechanical volume keys and the silent mode switch. They will be replaced by touch keys that will confirm pressing by haptics.
For many years, Apple has been using Taptic Engine linear actuators instead of vibration motors in its smartphones and laptops. So there is no doubt that pressing touch buttons will feel like pressing mechanical ones.
Smaller bezels around the display
This year, Apple will continue to reduce the bezels around the screen, and in the iPhone 15 Pro they will be only 1.55 mm. In addition, the glass on the front and back panels of the smartphone will have a slight rounding that smoothly transitions into the titanium frame.
New iPhone 15 Pro color
In addition to the traditional black, white, and gold colors of the iPhone case, Apple is trying to choose some non-standard color for its flagship.
For the iPhone 14 Pro, it was Deep Purple, but the iPhone 15 Pro will be released in a completely new deep red color, the exact code of which is 410D0D.
Smaller body dimensions and greater thickness
With smaller bezels and the same overall screen size, the iPhone 15 Pro will be slightly smaller than the iPhone 14 Pro. This, as well as more rounded edges, should make the smartphone feel much more comfortable in the hand. However, the thickness of the new model will increase slightly.
The dimensions of the iPhone 15 Pro are 146.47×70.46×8.24 mm, while the iPhone 14 Pro is slightly larger – 147.46×71.45×7.84 mm.
