1 September 2022 Ubisoft is suspending online services for 15 older games (2009-2013) to focus resources on supporting and developing newer and more popular games. It’s good. The bad thing is that after September 1, players will not only lose multiplayer, access to their in-game Ubisoft account and some online features, but even access to DLC they once bought.

On September 1, the following games will be cut off:

  • Anno 2070 (2011) – PC;
  • Assassin’s Creed II (2009) – PC, PlayStation 3;
  • Assassin’s Creed 3 (2012) – PC, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360;
  • Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood (2010) – PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD (2014) – PC;
  • Assassin’s Creed Revelations (2011) – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • Driver: San Francisco (2011) – PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • Far Cry 3 (2012) – PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier (2012) – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands (2010) – PC;
  • Rayman Legends (2013) – PlayStation 3, Wii U, Xbox 360;
  • Silent Hunter 5 (2010) – PC;
  • Space Junkies (2019) – PC (HTC VIVE, Oculus);
  • Splinter Cell: Blacklist (2013) – PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360;
  • ZombiU (2012) – Wii U.

Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Liberation HD, Driver San Francisco, Far Cry 3, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Silent Hunter 5 will lose access to purchased DLC.

Space Junkies, as an exclusively multiplayer game, will stop working altogether. To play the solo campaign in Ghost Recon Future Soldier, you will need to switch the console to offline mode.

Presumably, the loss of access to DLC is due to the fact that Ubisoft games, even the newest ones, check the list of purchased DLC by contacting the online service directly at the time of each game launch. No online servers – no DLC.

Well, it’s a very good reminder that with most online services, especially the Game-as-a-Service model, you don’t actually own anything. All 100500 games in your library have been given to you for temporary use and will disappear when the publisher wishes. Welcome to cyberpunk!

So if you have too many old games piled up on “play later”, don’t delay, better play them before they stop working.

P.S. I still consider Assassin’s Creed Revelations the best part of the entire series, and the Woodkid trailer is the best game trailer of all time. Gotta play it while Revelations is still running on PC.
