Final extinction. Review of the film Jurassic World Rebirth

- 5 July, 09:30 AM

Jurassic Park / World as a franchise is a rare phenomenon for cinema. The entire series rests on the glory of the first part of Jurassic Park from 1993, which is the only one that can be called a really good movie without any conventions or nuances. The following films seemed to gradually lower the bar of quality and semantic content, turning into completely pointless blockbusters. But judging by the ratings, people love dinosaurs so much that they are ready to watch frankly mediocre movies for their sake. However, Jurassic World Rebirth still managed to stand out unpleasantly. Because this is a movie that even dinosaurs cannot save.

Humanity is so used to the return of dinosaurs that the mighty creatures no longer interest anyone, but only cause irritation. However, they may be the key to creating a unique cure for heart disease. To do this, you need to take blood samples from three dinosaurs, which can only be found on one island near the equator. This secret and extremely important mission is entrusted to special agent Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) and her team, who are able to do the job without unnecessary questions. Paleontologist Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) will become an expert on dinosaur behavior on this journey. Of course, everything will not go according to plan, and people will have to survive in the fight against dangerous animals.

When it was announced that Gareth Edwards would be directing Jurassic World Rebirth, audiences were filled with hope. The director is a fan of the original Jurassic Park, and he even put aside his own original film for this dream project. Edwards is known for his ability to create scale, atmosphere, and down-to-earth science fiction, as seen in Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and The Creator.

However, in Jurassic World Rebirth, his talent is completely unused. There is no signature style, no attempt to create tension or a sense of wonder. It seems that the director was simply fulfilling the tasks of a commercial contract, without any passion or creative zeal, which, unfortunately, is felt in almost every frame.

One of the film's fundamental flaws is the script, which tries to combine two completely different films. The first is an adventure story with elements of comedy about a group of cynical mercenaries and a greedy corporation. The second is a thriller about a family that accidentally ends up on an island with dinosaurs and is forced to survive.

These two lines do not complement each other, but, on the contrary, interfere, breaking the pace and tone. The characters of both groups are so stereotypical that you forget their names immediately after meeting them. And the constant attempts of the writers to insert inappropriate jokes, even in moments of mortal danger, quickly become not just annoying, but destroy any possibility of suspense.

Almost every scene in Jurassic World Rebirth feels forced and artificial. Characters do illogical things, dinosaurs appear out of nowhere just when needed to advance the plot, and salvation comes in the form of incredible coincidences. The story is based not on internal logic, but on the will of the writers, who rudely push the characters from one point to another.

Because of this, it is impossible to feel empathy for the characters or believe in the reality of the threat. When you don't feel the weight of the stakes, the most spectacular scene with the tyrannosaurus turns into a soulless attraction. The film constantly pulls the viewer out of an already shallow immersion, forcing them to ask questions like "Why did they do that?" - to which there is no adequate answer. And we are still leaving behind a huge number of problems with the logic of the events on the screen.

Thematically, Jurassic World Rebirth is an absolute mess. The film grabs onto everything at once: there are hints of criticism of greedy medical corporations, reflections on ecology, the problems of genetic experiments, attempts to explore the lives of mercenaries, and the idea of understanding between different people. However, none of these themes receive proper development. They exist only as scenery against which a primitive story of survival unfolds. The film does not know what it wants to tell, and this uncertainty makes it even more empty and aimless.

Instead of offering anything new, the film relies too heavily on nostalgia. Yes, the dinosaurs still look impressive, and when John Williams' immortal theme song plays, your heart skips a beat. But these moments only serve to highlight how weak the film is in everything else. They're just reminders of how much better the previous installments were, especially the original.

This project was supposed to be a soft reboot of the franchise, but it doesn't create any intrigue or make you want to return to this world again. Jurassic World Rebirth feels like a tired repetition of the past, devoid of any spark or inventiveness.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this film is its unintentional irony. In the opening scenes, we are shown that humanity has grown tired of dinosaurs, they have become commonplace, which is rather annoying. And the quality of Jurassic World Rebirth itself proves that perhaps not only the fictional world, but also real viewers have grown tired of this franchise. When the majestic prehistoric lizards cannot save the film from boredom, it is a clear signal that it is time to let this series die out for good.

What we liked
  • dinosaurs are still cool
  • an element of nostalgia for Jurassic Park
What we didn't like
  • the characters do not evoke any empathy
  • every scene has problems with logic, presentation or script
  • a failure in trying to fit two stories into one
  • the authors have absolutely no idea what they were trying to say
  • Gareth Edwards' talents are wasted in this film

Only a lazy person wouldn't joke about the film's subtitle, but "rebirth" is really the last word that can be said about this frankly bad part of the Jurassic Park franchise.
