The Verkhovna Rada supported Ukraine's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines. This was announced by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
According to him, 299 people's deputies voted for bill No. 0329 "On the suspension of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction for Ukraine." In addition, 305 people's deputies supported the urgent signing of the document.
The draft law was registered on July 11, 2025. At the end of June, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree putting into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council on Ukraine's withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention.
The Ottawa Convention was adopted in 1997 and entered into force on March 1, 1999. Our country signed it in February 1999, and the treaty was ratified in 2005.
In May, the Lithuanian parliament also voted to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use of Anti-Personnel Mines. In June, Estonia and Finland announced their withdrawal.
