The FMBTech (Technologies for Existing and Future Main Battle Tanks) project has officially launched in the European Union. The initiative aims to modernize main battle tanks (MBTs) to meet the requirements of modern hybrid warfare. This was announced by Thales, which coordinates the project.

FMBTech brings together 26 participants from 13 EU countries and Norway. Funding is provided by the European Commission under the European Defence Fund (EDF) and by contributions from consortium members. The total project budget is €19 million.

Over the course of three years, the project participants will develop modular and adaptive solutions to ensure readiness for action in diverse and complex combat environments. FMBTech aims to create maneuverable, intelligent and interoperable tanks that can overcome the limitations of outdated fleets in EU countries and Norway.

The initiative is designed to improve the effectiveness, safety, and cost-effectiveness of both existing and future battle tanks, ensuring their key role on the battlefield and the transition to fifth-generation tanks.
