EU wants to double military aid by ordering weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers

- 5 May, 12:40 PM

The European Union may significantly increase military assistance to Ukraine if US President Donald Trump fails to convince Vladimir Putin to make peace, European Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius wrote on the social media X.

"If Putin isn’t convinced by Trump to make peace, we could bring forward more convincing arguments for peace very quickly — by greatly increasing our military support to Ukraine. Until now, the EU & US provided around €40B a year of military aid to Ukraine," he wrote.

But this money could be spent more effectively if the same amount were directed to the purchase of modern weapons in Ukraine. According to Andrius Kubilius, their cost is about half that of those produced in the EU or the US.

"This would effectively double the volume of weapons Ukraine receives for the same €40B. Our support’s real value would rise to €80B," the European Commissioner noted.

By the way, the European Commission is investing 910 million euros under the European Defense Fund (EDF) program to create an innovative defense industry in Europe.

The investment is expected to address capability gaps such as troop mobility and drone defense. For the first time, Ukrainian defense companies will be able to participate in EDF projects.
