A new tank gun and long-range ammunition for it were shown in Italy

The Italian company Leonardo has introduced a new 120 mm L55 tank gun and the latest VULCANO long-range ammunition for it, the Italian publication RID reports.

The L55 gun is designed for the upcoming Panther-IT main battle tank. It has a 55-caliber barrel that provides increased muzzle velocity and resistance to high operating pressures. This is made possible by a new self-forcing process developed by the company to strengthen the internal structure of the barrel.

The L55 gun will be installed on 82 of the 132 Panther-IT tanks, the rest will receive a modification of the L55A1 barrel from Rheinmetall. The system is also compatible with the Italian Ariete C2 tank and the AICS-120 combat vehicle, opening up prospects for export.

As for the new 120-mm VULCANO ammunition, it is designed to engage armored vehicles, missile launchers, air defense systems, and other targets at distances of up to 30 km.

The concept of the new VULCANO shells takes into account modern combat scenarios, where the tank acts as a multifunctional support platform for long-range strike operations.
